Castello del Terriccio

Castello del Terriccio is a densely colored, deep violet red wine with intense, exotic aromas of blackberry and ripe plum offset by heady spice, violet and balsam wood notes. On the palate the texture is highly extracted and lush, with black fruit, spice and smoky nuances carrying into an extended finish.

Wine Advocate

The 2001 Castello di Terriccio is quite an unusual wine, a blend of grapes planted initially on an experimental basis such as Syrah, Mourvedre, and Petit Verdot. Packed, intense, and superbly long, the wine offers a nose and palate of plums, raisins, underbrush, and truffles, powerfully concentrated but velvet-textured flavors, and a richness and breadth which virtually line and upholster the taste buds. Judging the aging potential of wine like this, entirely original in blend and produced for the first time, is something of a hazard, but two decades would seem to be the minimum.

Score: 95. —Daniel Thomases, April 2006.

Wine Spectator

Dark color with subtle yet rich aromas of currants, violets and berries. Chocolate and mint. Full-bodied, with silky, fine tannins and a long finish. Lots of finesse. Best after 2006. 1,660 cases made.

Score: 92. —James Suckling, December 31, 2004.

Wine Enthusiast

You may pick up slightly musty notes but they happily add to the wine’s complexity. Espresso bean, blackberry, resin, toast and balsamic vinegar come to mind and the wine delivers power in the mouth boosted by nicely etched tannins.

Score: 91. —Monica Larner, April 01, 2007.
